Charlotte Auto Fair (September 20-23, 2012)

Posted on November 8, 2012 by MarkAdams

With more than 10,000 vendor spaces and dozens of car clubs in attendance, the Charlotte Auto Fair is one of the world’s largest gatherings of car enthusiasts. Held twice a year at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, the four-day event in September attracted thousands of vendors and cars from all different manufacturers and years, from Camaros and Ferraris to Corvettes and Ford pick-ups.

    A Tribute to Carroll Shelby
This year, the Auto Fair paid tribute to legendary race car designer and driver Carroll Shelby, who died in May. An industry icon, Shelby was best known for his Mustang-inspired Cobra. Over three dozen special Shelby vehicles were on display, including Mustangs, Cobras and Dodges that spanned his influential 50-year career.

    Family Fun
Although the cars rightfully take center stage, the Auto Fair also features at least one non-car event geared toward families and children. This year, visitors were awed by Twiggy, a gray squirrel with a talent for water skiing. Both adults and kids took delight in watching Twiggy ski behind a minature speed boat in a lap pool.
Other attractions for the whole family included face painting, a petting zoo, games and rides.

    The Verneel Privatte Collection

Ingenuity is always an important theme at the Auto Fair, and this year’s gathering showcased it through the works of Vernell Privatte. Born and raised in North Carolina during the Great Depression, Privatte understood the value of hard work and the art of turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. Without any formal education, Privatte turned collected sheet metal and recycled components into an impressive collection of hand-built trucks. Visitors got a close-up look at many of the trucks, one of which has over 300,000 miles on the odometer!

    National Vendors and Famous Faces
The Auto Fair attracted over 10,000 vendors including national companies like Ford Racing and Maguire’s Car Care Products in addition to local favorites DeRisi Mustangs and Crazy Horse Custom Painting. Many famous faces could also be spotted in the throngs of attendees, including the legendary Vic Edlebrock Jr. and Nascar icon Bobby Allison.
