Michigan woman is quite possibly the oldest classic car collector still driving

Posted on October 16, 2012 by PeteRizzo

As anyone who regularly visits classic car shows can tell you, there is no strict demographic for collector car fans. It may at times seem like a man's scene, but the hot rod circuit is filled with expert gearheads from both genders and every age group.

However, Margaret Dunning of Plymouth, Michigan, is unique among car collectors not just because of her impressive, and rare, 1930 Packard 740 Roadster. This 102-year-old classic car buff is considered by many, including The New York Times, to be the oldest driver still on the road.

Dunning has been called the "Belle of the Concours" (i don't see this wording in the link) by her peers, though she is arguably without any at the prestigious Concours d'Elegance car show in Michigan. It is here where she won numerous awards over the past century for her beautifully maintained cream-colored Packard soft-top. Dunning still drives the classic regularly, and even performs her own routine maintenance on the car.

She grew up in Michigan seemingly surrounded by the automotive industry. In an interview with the Times, she described a casual friendship with friend and neighbor Henry Ford, driving at breakneck speeds down country roads for fun during the depression and learning how to drive when she was only 8 years old.

Along with the Packard, Dunning's daily driver, she also has a serious collection of American classics in her stable that any collector would love to get their hands on. Among these collectibles are a 1966 Cadillac DeVille, a 1975 Cadillac Eldorado convertible and a 1931 Model A.

Dunning was honored with a Classic Car Club of America award at the Pebble Beach Concours this past August, where Jay Leno presented the centenarian with a silver brooch.

Do you think you'll still be driving a classic when you reach 102? Leave your comments below:
