1,000 collector cars go under the gavel at Auburn Spring Auction

Posted on June 12, 2012 by PeteRizzo

From June 1 to 3, Auctions America by RM, a leader in collector car auctions, held its second annual Auburn Spring Auction, in Auburn, Indiana. According to reports, the three-day event featured more than 1,000 collector cars, including entries from the pre-war, muscle-car and hot-rod eras.

"It's that time of year when people want to drive with the top down," Auctions America by RM's president Donnie Gould said before the event. "We've made a special effort to bring in open-air cars of every kind, whether it's a convertible, roadster, retractable hardtop, T-roof or targa top."

And from the final attendance tallies, it appears as though Gould's theory on how to draw buyers was correct. The event reportedly drew thousands of more spectators than expected, with organizers noting a sizeable increase over last year's inaugural event.

WANE, a local Indiana TV news source, reported that the top seller was a 1930 Duesenberg, which sold for just under $500,000. Despite the price tag though, reports from prior auctions indicate this might have been a steal for the buyer. In 2010, a Duesenberg from the same year sold for $1.7 million.

While some cars fetched exorbitant prices, many others were sold for more modest sums. Auctioneers spent roughly $25,000 on a 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Coupe, $8,500 on a 1975 Chevrolet Corvette and $3,000 on a hardtop 1964 Ford Fairlane 500. (For a full list of sales, click here.)

However, despite the impressive bidding over the three-day period, organizers say they are ready to get started on the next event. According to WANE, organizers will spend the next three months planning the follow-up auction, which is scheduled to take place in Auburn from August 30 to September 2.

That was fun. Wow! It's hard to imagine that my dopey friends or I (when we were a lot younger) either owned a lot of those classics or drove in them (before they were called classics). Man does time fly by.
Drive fast and leave a sexy corpse
