Registration deadline for 2012 LeMons Pacific Northworst nears

Posted on May 18, 2012 by PeteRizzo

Described by its promoters as a "breeding ground for morons," the 2012 edition of 24 Hours of LeMons Pacific Northworst is set to offer racing fans 24 hours of off-kilter racing again this year. For those who aren't familiar with the event, 24 Hours of LeMons offers participants a chance to show their love of cars in the same way that the Razzies celebrates movies.

Fueled by a passion for truly bad rides, the event's particularly dedicated group of dragsters don togas, birkahs and their favorite flair so they can pilot equally garish rides for a chance to win first place in one of four classes (sorted in no particular order).

Started in 2006, 24 Hours of LeMons is a series of endurance races held across the United States restricted to cars that were purchased or restored to working order for $500 or less. This year's event is being held in Shelton, Washington's Ridge Motorsports Park on July 21 and 22. And while it's billed as a 24-hour event, the action takes place over the course of a whole weekend.

"According to oracles familiar with the event, the Saturday/Sunday endurance sessions will be complemented by optional Saturday-night LeMons Drag Racing on The Ridge's brand-new quarter-mile," a press release for the event said.

A report from Car and Driver noted that last year's event featured a number of notably kooky cars including a BMW 325i outfitted as a Rolls Royce and boxy Jeep Cherokee powered by technology from the now-defunct carmaker AMC.

To sign up, you can check your brain at the door and complete this form by May 12, provided you also pay the $500 entrance fee for cars. However, if you don't want to put your life and pride on the line in a $500 jalopy, you can still come and watch the event by securing an all-access pass. Offered at $20 for a day pass and $30 for a weekend pass, this ticket may be a better investment than any of the cars on display.
