Talking I've been waiting for this day, oh so long.

The time has come. One for Jesse and one for Dad.

The numbers on top are the weight before being baked at 250 degrees for 3 hours, and after.

When I was in the Army we called it "dimension lumber" and it was used for counseling

Just guessing, but I'm thinking it's going to be used to make a cub scout wooden car for the races?
I may not do it all right, but I'll do it myself the best I can - THATS HOT RODDING!

So the wife comes out to the garage and wonders what we're doing. I tell her that we are polishing the axles. She picks up an untouched one and says "Looks smooth to me" and then she says that she believes that we are wasting our time and that body design/weight placement is what will determine how fast the cars go. After trying to explain how rough the axles are out of the box, and what polishing them will accomplish, she still thinks it's a waste of time.

So, I pull out the Brinell 20x macroscope and tell her to give it a look. She is amazed, and the boy and I get our apology.

Some before and afters (after = small file, 400, 1000, 1500, & 2000 grit wet sanding with axle chucked up in cordless drill).

Notice the factory brakes/flashing on the head in the below pic.

I realize that highly polished, relief cut, and perfectly lathed axles are availble on Ebay for relatively cheap, but we are building our cars and parts, not paying someone else to do it for us. We will sink or swim by our own hands.

LOL. That was the second time the wife questioned me that night.
After she checked the axles out under the scope, I went in and grabbed our point & shoot camera. I came back out and laid it horizontally on top of the macro scope. She saw what I was thinking and told me "No way. That will never work." Well, with a little tuning and determination, it turns out it can work.

The tricky part was having to focus the scope, then focus the camera, then having to refocus the scope to compensate for the camera focus.
